GILBERT & GEORGE: ART EXHIBITION, a major exhibition celebrating the work of Gilbert & George, will open at Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art before travelling to the National Art Center, Tokyo in 2027. This will mark their first major exhibition in Japan in 30 years, while coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the artists’ meeting in 1967.
The exhibition will celebrate nearly six decades of the artists’ commitment to their belief in ‘Art for All’, tracing the evolution of their artistic practice, from their early Living Sculpture, ‘The Singing Sculpture’ (1969) to their later large-scale pictures exploring themes such as religion, sexuality and urban life. Rare photographs and archival footage documenting the artists’ visits to Japan during the 1970s are also on view.
This landmark exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience the extraordinary range of Gilbert & George’s singular, sincere and uncompromising vision of art.
